What is Anxiety?

Anxiety is experienced in a number of ways, emotionally as well as physically. For some, this includes experiences of excessive worry and feelings of stress, while for others this may involve intense fear or feelings of panic. Sometimes feelings of anxiety, especially in children and teens, manifest as irritability and anger. Physical symptoms include muscle tension, fatigue, sleep difficulties, and changes in heart rate and breathing.

Neurofeedback for Anxiety

Neurofeedback has been used to treat anxiety for over six decades. This treatment is based in neuroscience and supported by considerable research. Unlike medication that works on the entire brain, neurofeedback targets specific areas of brain associated with anxiety. During treatment, individuals are trained or stimulated in ways that promote brain regions associated with relaxation. In addition to strengthening the brain’s relaxation response, neurofeedback can also help decrease the overactive areas of the brain associated with worry, stress, and panic. Depending on the needs of the client, neurofeedback can also be tailored to address physical symptoms of anxiety including muscle tension/pain, fatigue, difficulties and insomnia.

Psychotherapy for Anxiety

In addition to neurofeedback treatments, Chicago Mind Solutions also offers psychotherapy for anxiety. This is often used to support and maintain changes in the brain achieved through neurofeedback. Psychotherapy involves learning skills to reduce daily stress and different ways to manage anxiety. This involves cognitive strategies to change thinking patterns as well as encouraging behavioral changes that promote wellness. Participation in neurofeedback is not required if individuals would like to participate exclusively in psychotherapy with one of our knowledgeable therapy specialists.

Generalized Anxiety Disorder

Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) causes excessive, uncontrollable worry about everyday life.

Worry presents itself with negative thoughts and the development of scenarios that might happen when going about your daily activities.

Social Anxiety Disorder

SAD causes intense feelings of self-consciousness around others. Those with SAD might avoid new social situations.

Despite the often-encompassing fear experienced with SAD, it is a treatable condition you can overcome.
