What is Neuropsychological Testing?
Neuropsychological testing, also referred to as “neuropsych testing,” is an evaluation of a person’s cognitive processes and psychological functioning. There are several different types of neuropsychological testing depending on the concerns of client. Here are a few of the most common:
Educational Testing
Educational testing, also referred to as academic testing, evaluates a student’s academic performance, intellectual functioning, and different strengths and weakness that can impact learning. This form of assessment helps identify learning disorders or conditions (e.g. ADHD or anxiety) that may be impacting a student’s learning and performance in school. Educational testing can also help recognize children who may have exceptional abilities or academic strengths.
Cognitive Testing
Cognitive assessments are performed to help diagnose and evaluate medical conditions such as traumatic brain injury, concussion, stroke, Alzheimer’s and other memory disorders. These evaluations are used to help determine the areas of the brain impacted, level of functioning, and changes over time. Results of these assessments guide treatment recommendations and potential needs for supportive care.
Psychosocial and Personality Testing
Psychosocial and personality testing is used to evaluate mental health, personality, and other psychosocial factors. These evaluations can help to diagnose mental health conditions and provide recommendations for treatment. Depending on the needs of the client, the evaluation can include tests related to personality and psychosocial factors. Some clients desire testing focused primarily on personality and psychosocial factor to better understand themselves so that they may use this information to guide personal decision-making (e.g. career choice) and other goals.
What are the benefits of testing?
There are many benefits to neuropsychological testing and evaluation. Some of these benefits and reasons for testing include:
- Helping students obtain academic accommodations and support (e.g. IEP, 504 plans, and other testing accommodations).
- Providing guidance and recommendations to maximize academic success both in and outside the classroom.
- Recognizing high achieving students that may benefit from specialized curriculums and programs adapted to their abilities.
- Assessing needs for supportive care and guiding decision-making for individuals who have experienced brain injury, Alzheimer’s, memory disorders, or other forms of cognitive impairment.
- Providing information to help make decisions related to certain government programs and benefits, insurance issues, and legal maters
- Helping diagnose mental health conditions and provide recommendations for treatment.
- Learning more about personality and other psychosocial factors to help the individual identify compatible goals and guide personal decision-making
