Mental Performance Training FAQs

Get answers to common questions about mental performance counseling, sport psychology techniques, and how our Chicago-based mental skills training helps athletes, professionals, and performers excel under pressure.

What is mental performance counseling?

Mental performance counseling combines evidence-based psychotherapy techniques with sport psychology principles to enhance your ability to perform under pressure. Unlike traditional therapy that focuses primarily on treating mental health conditions, mental performance counseling is educational and skills-based—teaching you practical strategies to optimize focus, manage competitive stress, and develop healthy habits that translate into consistent success.

This specialized approach helps you free your mind from fears, negative thought patterns, and performance anxiety so you can access your full potential when it matters most. Whether you’re preparing for a championship game, a crucial business presentation, or an important audition, mental performance counseling equips you with the psychological tools to stay out of your own way and perform at your best.

What is the goal of mental performance training?

The primary goal is to educate and empower you to be at your peak when it counts. Mental performance training equips you with essential attributes to achieve your goals by helping you:

  • Enhance focus and concentration during high-pressure situations
  • Manage anxiety and stress more effectively before and during performance
  • Build unshakeable confidence in your abilities
  • Develop mental resilience to bounce back from setbacks
  • Improve decision-making under pressure
  • Create productive thought patterns that support rather than sabotage performance
  • Understand your strengths and weaknesses to strategically set yourself up for success

Whether your arena is sports, business, performing arts, or any field requiring consistent high-level performance, mental performance training helps you face challenges more comfortably and overcome obstacles as they arise.

Is mental performance training just for athletes?

Absolutely not. While mental performance counseling has deep roots in sport psychology, its applications extend far beyond athletics. You would likely benefit from mental performance training if you:

  • Perform tasks under pressure (executives, surgeons, first responders, performers)
  • Want to learn more efficiently (students, musicians, anyone acquiring new skills)
  • Need to optimize your lifestyle to excel in your chosen discipline
  • Experience situations where demands exceed your perceived ability

We work with business professionals preparing for high-stakes presentations, performing artists managing stage anxiety, students optimizing test performance, and anyone who needs to consistently deliver their best when it matters most. The mental skills that help a basketball player stay focused during free throws are the same skills that help a surgeon maintain composure during complex procedures or a CEO make clear decisions during crisis management.

Parents of young competitors also benefit significantly—learning how to properly support their children without contributing to burnout or diminishing their love for their activity.

What is your background and experience in mental performance training?

William’s Background:

Despite now working with world-class athletes, I grew up as an un-talented athlete myself—slow, unable to jump high, and often clumsy when learning new skills. This forced me to rely heavily on training, decision-making, communication, and mental skills just to survive on the court. I later trained and competed as a classical musician, further developing my ability to practice and perform under intense pressure.

These experiences sparked my fascination with the human mind and our ability to improve regardless of natural talent or gifts. I’ve dedicated my career to this belief: developing effective mental habits, skills, and strategies helps anyone access their abilities and discover capabilities they weren’t aware of. I now have the privilege of empowering motivated competitors and helping people reach their goals—the most exciting challenge one can undertake, and I get to experience that excitement every day.

Can you explain your approach and methodology?

Our methodology is personalized, evidence-based, and skills-focused:

  1. Comprehensive Assessment We begin with detailed intake forms and, when applicable, observation of your performances. This outside perspective helps us identify problem areas, strengths, and the specific mental barriers affecting your performance.
  2. Collaborative Goal Setting We work together to align strategies with your primary goals, incorporating your feedback throughout the process to ensure relevance and effectiveness.
  3. Customized Skill Development We teach a range of psychological strategies designed to enhance both mental and physical capabilities:
  • Visualization and mental rehearsal techniques
  • Anxiety and stress management protocols
  • Focus and refocusing skills
  • Productive self-talk development
  • Pre-performance routines
  • Emotional regulation strategies
  • Mindfulness and present-moment awareness
  1. Practical Application & Refinement Mental performance counseling is a form of skill acquisition—we help you put methods into practice to make them “sticky.” We continuously evaluate what’s working, what isn’t, and how to adjust approaches as you grow through the counseling process.
  2. Contextual Adaptation We tailor strategies to your specific circumstances, whether you’re in-season or out-of-season, facing immediate performance demands or building long-term capabilities.

How do you tailor training programs to individual needs and goals?

Every client receives a fully customized approach:

  • Initial Assessment: Through comprehensive intake forms and performance observation, we gain a complete picture of your unique challenges and strengths
  • Strategic Planning: We align mental skills training with your primary goals, whether that’s managing pre-competition anxiety, improving focus during crucial moments, or building confidence after setbacks
  • Contextual Adaptation: In-season training focuses on immediate performance optimization, while off-season work emphasizes skill development and long-term mental strength building
  • Continuous Feedback Integration: We regularly incorporate your experiences and adjust strategies to ensure maximum effectiveness
  • Sport/Field-Specific Application: While the core mental skills are universal, we apply them within the specific context of your discipline

What kind of commitment is required for mental performance training?

Time Commitment:

  • Standard sessions: 45-60 minutes
  • Extended sessions: 90 minutes (available for specific needs)
  • Augmented film study sessions: 90 minutes (30 minutes neurofeedback + 45-50 minutes counseling)
  • Frequency is tailored to your needs, goals, and schedule

Effort Commitment: The truth about mental performance training: you get out what you put in. Just like physical training, mental skills require consistent practice and application. We encourage active reinforcement of techniques between sessions—the athletes and professionals who see the most dramatic improvements are those who dedicate themselves to practicing mental skills daily.

Financial Commitment: Sessions are structured as professional services. While mental performance counseling is not typically covered by insurance (as it’s educational/performance enhancement rather than treatment for a medical condition), the investment in your performance capabilities often pays dividends in scholarships, career advancement, or competitive success.

How can you help me if you don't know anything about my specific sport or field?

This is an excellent question that highlights an important truth: mental performance tools are universally transferable across all sports and performance domains.

The mental skills required for a gymnast to maintain focus during a beam routine are the same skills a quarterback uses to stay calm in the pocket, which are the same skills a trial attorney uses during cross-examination. While the physical demands differ dramatically, the psychological demands—managing pressure, maintaining focus, building confidence, recovering from mistakes—are remarkably similar.

Our expertise lies in understanding the psychology of performance, not in being experts in every sport or discipline. We help you apply proven mental strategies within your specific context. In fact, our outside perspective often provides valuable insights that someone deeply embedded in your field might miss.

How do you come up with my goals? I’m super busy and not sure I have time for this.

We understand you’re busy—that’s precisely why mental performance training is valuable. Here’s our process:

Goal Development:

  • You lead the goal-setting process. We don’t impose goals; we collaborate with you to identify what success looks like in your specific situation
  • We start with where you are now, assessing current performance levels and identifying barriers
  • We work backward from your ultimate objectives, creating actionable steps that fit your schedule and commitments

Time Efficiency: Mental performance training is actually a time multiplier, not a time drain. By improving focus, reducing performance anxiety, and optimizing your mental approach, you become more efficient in practice and more effective in competition or performance. Many clients find that 45-60 minutes of mental skills work per week saves them hours of inefficient practice and reduces time lost to performance anxiety and overthinking.

Practical Integration: We design mental training exercises that integrate seamlessly into your existing routine—techniques you can practice during warm-ups, commutes, or moments before performance. Mental performance training doesn’t require additional dedicated time in the gym or studio; it enhances the time you’re already spending.

If it would benefit me, why haven't I done this before?

Excellent question. There are several common reasons:

  1. The “Fixed Mindset” Myth Many people believe mental skills like confidence, focus, and resilience are traits you either have or don’t have. This is demonstrably false—these are trainable skills, just like physical strength or technical ability.
  2. Lack of Awareness Despite research showing that 50-90% of performance is mental, most athletes and performers spend only 5-10% of their training time on mental skills development. There’s a massive gap between the importance of mental performance and the attention it receives.
  3. Limited Access Until recently, mental performance training was primarily available to elite athletes at colleges and professional organizations. It’s now becoming more accessible to serious competitors at all levels.
  4. Misunderstanding the Process Some people confuse mental performance training with motivational speaking or assume it’s only necessary when something is wrong. In reality, it’s a systematic skill-development process that benefits anyone seeking peak performance.

The athletes and professionals who commit to mental performance training often wish they had started years earlier. The good news: it’s never too late to develop these crucial skills.
